“Britain is in an uproar over a shoplifting scam: Six million people are reportedly using self-checkouts to steal from stores. Will you admit to using this prevalent ‘trick’?”
A study has revealed that six million Brits are exploiting self-checkouts to commit theft. According to an Ipsos poll of 1,099 individuals, one in eight shoppers selects a less expensive item on the screen than the one they are actually purchasing. This tactic, known as the ‘banana trick,’ involves scanning an item as a fruit or vegetable to pay a significantly reduced price.
The survey also revealed that nearly half (48%) of respondents believe this trick should not be classified as a criminal act. Additionally, 8% of participants admitted to stealing items worth up to £10 without paying, with 26% of these individuals asserting that such acts should not be considered a crime. Furthermore, 13% confessed to taking items valued at £1 or less, while 47% of respondents felt that such actions should not be treated as criminal offenses.
