Simon Cowell has suggested the existence of strain between himself and former American Idol co-star Ryan Seacrest in a recent interview.
During an appearance on The Interview, a podcast produced by The New York Times, the 66-year-old television producer and former American Idol judge indicated that he has not closely followed Mr. Seacrest’s professional activities in the fifteen years since Cowell concluded his service as a judge on the program.
When asked what, in Cowell’s opinion, contributed to Mr. Seacrest’s widespread popularity, Cowell replied: “I don’t know, actually. He was very, very ambitious… I don’t follow his career if I’m being honest with you.” Cowell further alleged that Mr. Seacrest possessed a “massive desire” to achieve fame, while adding faint praise by acknowledging that Mr. Seacrest “does work hard.”
Representatives for both Cowell and Seacrest were contacted for comment but had not provided a response at the time of reporting. A spokesperson for Cowell, however, clarified to The Daily Mail that the two men remain longtime friends and denied that any dispute exists between them.
Cowell and Seacrest first appeared together on the inaugural 2002 season of American Idol. Cowell had joined the production after serving as a judge on the British series Pop Idol, itself a successor to the New Zealand program Popstars. After initially encountering resistance from U.S. television networks, an American adaptation was approved by Rupert Murdoch, reportedly at the encouragement of his daughter Elisabeth Murdoch.
Cowell served as part of the original judging panel alongside Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, while Mr. Seacrest co-hosted the show with Brian Dunkleman, who departed after the first season. Cowell left American Idol in 2010 following the conclusion of season nine, whereas Mr. Seacrest has continued as host.
In the interview, Cowell stated that he and Mr. Seacrest “rarely talk now” and characterized Seacrest as consistently career-focused, also stating: “I don’t know what he’s done or is doing.”
Although the two were largely seen as cooperative on-screen, their tenure included a public exchange in 2007 in which Cowell appeared to make a pointed remark following a question from Mr. Seacrest. The interaction prompted speculation at the time, though later reports indicated the dialogue may have been partially scripted and that the two men maintained an amicable relationship off camera.
An individual familiar with the production later told the Today Show that Cowell and Seacrest were “good friends off-camera” and socialized together during audition tours, describing such exchanges as theatrics for broadcast rather than genuine conflict.#newsafro_
