Highlife musician Kofi Nti has formally pledged to honor the legacy of the late Ghanaian music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, by performing three of his songs at every event in which he appears. According to Mr. Nti, this commitment is both a testament to the immense influence Daddy Lumba had on his own career and a deliberate effort to ensure that the late artist’s contribution to Ghanaian music continues to be celebrated.
Speaking to Graphic Showbiz at the one-week observance held at Independence Square in Accra on Saturday, August 30, the Rakia hitmaker stated:
“Everybody knows Daddy Lumba inspired my music career. His style and the way he sang encouraged me a lot. I intend to keep his legacy alive by performing three of his songs anytime I mount the stage.”
The initiative, he explained, is aimed at preserving the memory of the Highlife legend and keeping his body of work alive for generations to come.
The official program commenced at approximately 10:15 a.m. with an opening prayer by Prophet Amoako Atta of Parliament Chapel, invoking divine presence for a smooth ceremony. Among those in attendance was Daddy Lumba’s first wife, Madam Akosua Serwaa, who was ushered in with traditional songs of commiseration. His second wife, popularly known as Odo Broni, arrived shortly thereafter.
The one-week observance also provided an opportunity to reflect on Daddy Lumba’s extraordinary life and career. Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region, he began his musical journey at the age of 16, eventually leading the Juaben Secondary School choir in 1983. After secondary school, he formed the Lumba Brothers group with friends Yaw and Kwabena, as well as his girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese. With Theresa’s support, Daddy Lumba later traveled to Germany in search of greener pastures, where he met Ernest Nana Acheampong.
Daddy Lumba passed away at the Bank Hospital in Accra at dawn on Saturday, July 26, at the age of 60.#newsafro_
