Val Kilmer, the versatile actor renowned for his roles in “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” and “Heat,” passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 65 due to pneumonia.
Kilmer’s career spanned decades, showcasing his range from comedic performances in “Top Secret!” and “Real Genius” to intense portrayals such as Jim Morrison in “The Doors.” His dedication to the craft was evident in his method acting techniques, immersing himself deeply into his characters.
In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, leading to significant health challenges, including two tracheotomies. Despite these obstacles, he continued to engage with his art and fans, even collaborating with technology companies to recreate his voice using AI.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues and friends. Actor Josh Brolin reflected on their friendship, stating, “See ya, pal. I’m going to miss you. You were a smart, challenging, brave, uber-creative firecracker.” Director Michael Mann, who worked with Kilmer on “Heat,” remarked, “While working with Val on ‘Heat’ I always marvelled at the range, the brilliant variability within the powerful current of Val’s possessing and expressing character.”
Kilmer is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack, who have requested privacy during this time.
