Ademola Lookman, the newly crowned African Footballer of the Year, made an immediate impact upon his return to Atalanta’s starting lineup, scoring a crucial goal in their 3-2 win over Empoli on Sunday. The victory extended Atalanta’s lead at the top of Serie A to two points, with Lookman’s goal putting them 2-1 ahead just before halftime, following an early strike from Empoli’s Lorenzo Colombo.
Lookman, who showcased his CAF award before kick-off at Gewiss Stadium, expressed his determination with a social media post saying, “Hungrier than ever. Big win.” His goal helped maintain Atalanta’s club-record winning streak, now at 11 consecutive Serie A victories.
The 27-year-old’s form this season has been outstanding, with 9 goals and 4 assists in 14 league appearances, and a total of 12 goals and 5 assists across all competitions, further cementing his importance to the team.
Lookman’s goal against Empoli came at a pivotal moment, as he slotted home from a tight angle following Nicolò Zaniolo’s header from Charles De Ketelaere’s cross just before halftime. This goal proved crucial, as Empoli later equalized from the penalty spot. However, De Ketelaere’s winner ensured that Atalanta secured all three points.
Atalanta’s manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, praised his team’s resilience in securing the hard-fought victory, highlighting their ability to bounce back and continue their strong run at the top of Serie A.
Gian Piero Gasperini emphasized that Atalanta’s success stems from their energy and team spirit, which enables them to believe in a victory until the very last minute, even on days when they are not at their best. He highlighted the importance of this mentality in making a difference, ensuring they never give up.
He also acknowledged Empoli’s quality, noting that they came to play good football, but Atalanta’s character and desire to win ultimately earned them the well-deserved victory.
Atalanta’s victory has secured them a historic position at the top of the Serie A table for Christmas, marking a significant milestone in the club’s 116-year history. Gasperini expressed hopes that 2025 could continue the success of 2024, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining their winning mentality.
Ademola Lookman has seen his value soar, rising from €30m at the end of 2023 to €55m, making him Nigeria’s second most valuable player after Victor Osimhen. His stellar performances, including a key role in Nigeria’s AFCON final appearance and his Europa League triumphs, helped elevate him to elite status. Lookman’s CAF Awards victory further cemented his place in football history, as he became the seventh Nigerian to win the prestigious honor.
