Bobby Cox, the Hall of Fame manager who became one of the most iconic figures in baseball history, has died at the age of 84, the Atlanta Braves confirmed on Saturday.
The Braves paid tribute to their longtime skipper in a heartfelt statement shared on X, praising Cox for his unmatched knowledge of the game and his dedication to player development throughout his legendary career.
The organization also honored Cox’s devotion to his family, offering condolences to his wife, Pam, as well as their children and grandchildren.
Before becoming a managerial legend, Cox had a brief playing career in Major League Baseball, appearing in 220 games for the New York Yankees during the 1968 and 1969 seasons.
Following his time as a player, Cox moved into coaching and management within the Yankees’ minor league system before joining the club’s coaching staff in 1977, helping the franchise capture its first World Series title since 1962.
Cox was later hired by media mogul Ted Turner and the Braves organization ahead of the 1978 season. Although his first stint as manager ended after four challenging seasons, he eventually returned to Atlanta after managing the Toronto Blue Jays.
In 1990, Cox stepped back into the Braves’ dugout and launched one of the most successful managerial runs in MLB history. Under his leadership, Atlanta captured 14 division titles, five National League pennants, and the 1995 World Series championship with stars including Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, and Chipper Jones.
Known for fiercely defending his players and arguing with umpires, Cox was ejected from 162 games during his career — the most by any manager in MLB history.
He retired following the 2010 season and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 2014 alongside legendary managers Tony La Russa and Joe Torre.
Cox’s passing marks the end of an era for baseball and the Braves franchise, where he remains one of the most respected and beloved figures in team history.#newsafro_
