The arrest of a man accused of creating and circulating an AI-generated voice note falsely attributed to President Bola Tinubu has sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria, with many citizens questioning the priorities of security agencies.
The suspect, identified as Ifechukwu Dennis, was arrested by the Nigerian Police Force for allegedly generating and spreading a manipulated audio recording that mimicked the president’s voice. The fake recording, which circulated widely on social media, contained controversial remarks about insecurity, the 2023 election, and the state of the nation.
The arrest was announced by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that an Inspector-General of Police special team tracked down the suspect behind the AI-generated clip.
According to investigators, the doctored audio was attached to a video featuring social media critic VeryDarkMan, but authorities said their findings showed he was not responsible for posting the manipulated version.
While some Nigerians applauded the police for taking action against misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence, many others questioned why similar speed and efficiency are rarely seen in cases involving kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes.
Social media users argued that the successful tracking of the suspect demonstrated the capability of security agencies, prompting renewed calls for the same level of commitment in addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges.
The incident has also reignited conversations about the growing risks posed by AI-generated content and the need for stronger safeguards against digital impersonation and misinformation.#newsafro_
