Recent developments in Kwara State have raised serious security concerns as suspected terrorists have begun circulating threatening letters to multiple communities, prompting fear-driven evacuations.
According to reports, in the last six days, letters have been sent to at least four communities, including Ira, Inaja, and Aho in Oyun Local Government Area. One letter, allegedly signed by “The Writer (SANUFH)” on behalf of the so-called Nigeria Terrorist Association (NTA), warned residents that attacks were imminent. The full text of the letter, retaining its original grammar, threatened killings, kidnappings, and destruction, explicitly mentioning Ira, Inaja, and Aho as future targets. The authenticity of the letters has not yet been verified by authorities.
Following the delivery of the letter in Ira—dropped at a motorcycle park near the central mosque—residents began leaving their homes. Security agencies, including the DSS, police, soldiers, and the NSCDC, were immediately deployed to patrol the affected communities. Traditional leaders, including the Oninaja of Inaja, Oba Wahab Oyetoro, convened with local authorities to develop protective strategies.
Community leaders reported widespread fear disrupting daily life. Schools were closed, farming activities suspended, and businesses shuttered as residents sought refuge in neighboring towns such as Offa. Local vigilantes have been patrolling the surrounding areas, while residents rely on prayers and caution to protect themselves and their families.
Security forces confirmed receipt of the threat letters and have intensified operations to verify the letters’ origin and safeguard the communities. The Kwara State Police, DSS, and Nigerian Army have increased patrols, coordinated with local governments, and held emergency meetings to review strategies for public safety. Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and cooperate with security personnel to prevent potential attacks.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities continue to investigate the credibility of the threats while maintaining a heightened security presence across the affected areas.#newsafro_
