The Deputy Head of Mission of the British High Commission, Simon Field, visited world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua at a Lagos hospital following a fatal road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
According to a statement released by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Ogun State Governor, Field met with Joshua and also held discussions with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The British High Commission confirmed it was formally notified of the accident and is monitoring developments, maintaining contact with the hospital and the Ogun State Government. Families of the deceased have also been contacted through the Mission.
The accident, which occurred around midday on Monday, involved a Toyota Lexus carrying Joshua and three other passengers. Two occupants were confirmed dead: Ayodele Kelvin Olu, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, a 36-year-old British citizen.
Following the crash, Governors Abiodun and Sanwo-Olu visited the hospital to supervise Joshua’s care and remained there for several hours. Governor Abiodun stated that he and the Lagos State Governor oversaw treatment and ensured that Joshua received appropriate medical attention. Joshua’s condition was reported as stable.
Other senior officials present at the hospital included Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and Director-General of the National Sports Commission Bukola Olopade. President Bola Tinubu was also briefed on the incident and spoke with Joshua and his mother to convey condolences and offer support.
Authorities have initiated a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, with the Ogun State Government assuring that findings will be made public upon completion of the probe.
