Nigerian Afrobeat singer Charles Chukwu, professionally known as Crayon, has announced the passing of his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Chukwu.
The Mavins Records artiste disclosed in an emotional post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday evening that his mother died on July 4.
Describing her as his “rock, backbone, and angel,” Crayon expressed the depth of his grief, calling the day of her death the “darkest” of his life.
He recounted their final conversation, which took place only days before her passing, noting that she had—as was customary at the beginning of every month—prayed for him and his siblings.
“I didn’t know that would be your last prayer. You sounded so healthy and like nothing was wrong. Only for my whole world to suddenly crumble right in front of me,” he wrote.
The singer further recalled the harrowing moment of seeing his mother’s lifeless body on a hospital bed, describing it as an experience that shattered him completely and embodied his greatest fear.
In his heartfelt message, Crayon lamented the timing of her passing, which came just days before his birthday and at a time when the family had begun to experience stability and success after years of hardship.
“After all the suffer wey we don suffer for decades, na now wey God don bless us, you come die leave me? Wetin come be the need?” he wrote in a mix of English and Pidgin.
He praised his late mother as a “warrior” who carried the family’s burdens with unwavering strength and resilience, ensuring their survival through years of struggle.
Despite his anguish, Crayon pledged to honor her memory by remaining strong, caring for the family, and continuing to pursue success in line with her hopes for him.
“I will never say goodbye because I know you are living through me and you are always with me. Thank you for everything, my beautiful mummy. Till we meet again, my angel,” he concluded.
Crayon also confirmed that Mrs. Evelyn Chukwu has since been laid to rest.#newsafro_
