At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, Ms. Phylicia Rashad delivered a memorial tribute to her late Cosby Show co-star, Mr. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who passed away at the age of 54 on July 20 in Costa Rica as a result of drowning.
From the stage of the Peacock Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, Ms. Rashad, aged 77, stated: ‘He was a beloved teenager in an iconic television series whom the world witnessed mature into a man.’
She further remarked: ‘And like all of our friends and colleagues who departed during the past year, Malcolm-Jamal Warner remains in our hearts. Tonight, consistent with Emmy tradition, we honor their memory not only for their immense talent, but also for the manner in which they inspired us to believe in something greater—the best that resides within us.’
Ms. Phylicia Rashad, known for her portrayal of Clair Huxtable on the 1980s television series The Cosby Show, addressed the passing of numerous entertainers over the preceding year during the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.
She stated: ‘Although they may no longer be physically present with us, we may take comfort in the knowledge that their influence endures, that their enduring contributions will continue to resonate through narrative, and that each, in turn, touched our lives.’
Ms. Phylicia Rashad, a six-time Emmy Award nominee, further remarked: ‘Whether you grew up watching them, or have only recently discovered their brilliance, their light remains woven into the very fabric of our industry.’
During the ‘In Memoriam’ segment, Mr. Vince Gill and Ms. Lainey Wilson performed the song Go Rest High on That Mountain while images of departed industry figures were displayed on the main screen. Among those memorialized were Mr. Quincy Jones, Mr. Ozzy Osbourne, and Ms. Loni Anderson. Additional honorees included Mr. John Amos, Mr. Alan Bergman, Ms. Valerie Mahaffey, Mr. Julian McMahon, Mr. David Lynch, Ms. Maggie Smith, Ms. Michelle Trachtenberg, and Mr. George Wendt.
Mr. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, together with his eight-year-old daughter, had been caught in a rip current at Playa Cocles in the Limón Province of Costa Rica. According to the Judicial Investigation Department of Costa Rica, Mr. Warner drowned while on the Caribbean beach. The Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed that his cause of death was ‘asphyxia due to submersion’ and classified the incident as accidental. An initial report indicated that he had been rescued from the water by bystanders present on the beach.#newsafro_
