Speaking at the World Environment Day 2025 commemoration held on Thursday, June 5, in Kwabenya, Accra, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama affirmed the government’s commitment to implementing robust measures aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s forest reserves and addressing the escalating issue of plastic pollution.
In his address, the President remarked:
“We have been planting trees and cutting them down at the same time. To reduce deforestation, I will issue a directive prohibiting the use of wood in the manufacture of school furniture. Going forward, environmentally sustainable alternatives such as recycled plastic or metal shall be adopted.”
The President emphasized that this directive forms an integral part of a comprehensive national policy framework designed to mitigate forest degradation and embed sustainability principles within public procurement processes.
World Environment Day 2025 was observed under the global theme “Restore Our Earth: From Words to Action.” In alignment with this theme, President Mahama urged stakeholders across all sectors to actively support governmental initiatives aimed at fostering environmental stewardship and transitioning Ghana toward a greener, more sustainable future.#newsafro_
