West African Boxing Union light-welterweight champion Raheem “Badoo” Animashaun has boldly declared himself the best boxer in Nigeria following his latest victory at GOTV Boxing Night 33, as reported by PUNCH Sports Extra.
The teenage sensation, who is also a law student at the University of Lagos, extended his undefeated professional record to 15 wins after defeating Benin Republic’s Gboja Jean Coffi via technical knockout in the third round on Saturday. The fight took place at the Indoor Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
Animashaun dominated the bout from the start, landing several powerful blows before Coffi was unable to continue after sustaining an injury. The referee halted the match at one minute and 39 seconds of the third round. Despite the impressive victory, Animashaun expressed disappointment that the fight ended prematurely, limiting his opportunity to showcase his full range of skills.
He further explained that his performance is often shaped by the calibre of his opponent, and in this case, he was unable to push himself to his limits. Animashaun’s declaration as Nigeria’s top boxer is backed by his consistent record and his rise as one of the youngest champions in West Africa.
West African Boxing Union light-welterweight champion Raheem “Badoo” Animashaun has declared that his recent victory at GOTV Boxing Night 33 was far from his best performance, blaming his opponent’s early withdrawal for denying him the chance to fully demonstrate his abilities.
“This was not my best fight,” the 17-year-old told PUNCH Sports Extra. “My opponent could not push me far enough. He gave up too early, and that limited my ability to showcase what I am truly capable of in the ring.”
Despite not receiving the Best Fighter of the Night award, the unbeaten teen pugilist — now 15-0 with nine knockouts — remained unfazed, insisting that accolades are secondary to proof in the ring.
“I am the best fighter in Nigeria,” he said confidently. “Whether I’m awarded or not, it doesn’t change anything. Anyone who believes they are better should step into the ring with me. I’m ready for any challenge, any time.”
Balancing his rising boxing career with studying law at the University of Lagos, Animashaun credits his academic discipline and mental fortitude for his success. “I’ve always juggled education and boxing,” he said. “I was assistant head boy in secondary school, and now I’m studying law at UNILAG. It’s not easy, but I believe those who aspire to greatness must be able to do multiple things well. I see myself as a king in both boxing and academics.”
Having turned professional in February 2024, the Mushin-born fighter is now calling on promoters and management outfits to support his journey toward continental and eventually global titles. “I want people who recognise real talent to come forward and support me. I never shy away from a fight. I’m always ready for battle,” he said.#newsafro_
