Ayobami Sodiq, also known as Spending, a close associate of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad, has denied hiding details about the singer’s death. Sodiq addressed the controversy surrounding his conflicting statements about his last encounter with Mohbad. Initially, he had stated that he saw Mohbad around 9 pm, but he later clarified that their last meeting was actually between 11 am and 12 pm, attributing the discrepancy to the emotional distress and anxiety he experienced after Mohbad’s sudden passing.
Sodiq also responded to accusations that he was present at Mohbad’s house on the day of his death, which led to his wrongful detention at a police station. The emotional turmoil from the events surrounding Mohbad’s death, he explained, contributed to the inconsistency in his earlier statement. Sodiq expressed his frustration and distress over the false accusations, insisting that he had not concealed any information related to his friend’s death.
Ayobami Sodiq, also known as Spending, provided a detailed explanation for the discrepancy in his previous statement about his last encounter with Mohbad. In a social media post, he clarified that the last time he saw the late singer was between 11 am and 12 pm, not at 9 pm as he had initially stated. Sodiq explained that his earlier comment was made during a livestream with Westo in February 2024, shortly after his release from detention. During the livestream, Westo had asked him about his last meeting with Mohbad, and in a moment of emotional distress, he gave the inaccurate time.
He attributed the confusion to the emotional trauma, anxiety, and psychological strain he had been experiencing due to Mohbad’s sudden death. Sodiq further explained that he had been wrongfully accused of being at Mohbad’s house on the day of his death and was detained at a police station, which contributed to his mental and emotional state at the time of the interview. He expressed his regret for the inconsistency, stating that he was not in the right frame of mind when answering the question.
Ayobami Sodiq (Spending) clarified that his previous statement about the last time he saw Mohbad alive was consistent with his testimony at the coroner’s inquest. He reiterated that he never intended to deceive or lie about the situation and apologized for any misinformation. According to Sodiq, he saw Mohbad alive between 11 am and 12 pm on Monday, September 11, 2023, and left his house between 3 pm and 4 pm, which matches the time he gave during his testimony at the coroner’s inquest.
Sodiq also denied any discussions about Mohbad’s death with social media influencers while he was in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, except for one conversation with Westo and his assistant. He dismissed claims of existing audio recordings or text messages about such conversations as false.
In closing, Sodiq expressed that Mohbad’s death remains a painful experience for him, and he is still coping with the trauma. He reiterated his call for justice, urging that those responsible for Mohbad’s death be held accountable.
