According to claims made in a new book, Meghan Markle allegedly annoyed Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day by disregarding certain royal protocols. The incident reportedly occurred during her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.
The book alleges that Meghan did not adhere to specific instructions or traditions expected of royal brides, which left the late monarch feeling displeased. However, no official statement from the royal family has confirmed these claims, and the details surrounding the supposed breach of protocol remain speculative.
The claims are the latest in a series of controversies and revelations involving Meghan and Prince Harry’s relationship with the royal family, as detailed in various publications and interviews over the years.
Royal author Tom Bower, in his book Revenge (2022), claimed that the late Queen Elizabeth II expressed concerns about Meghan Markle’s choice to wear a veil during her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018. Reportedly, Her Majesty questioned the necessity of a veil, as Meghan had previously been married to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson from 2011 to 2013.
Traditionally, a white bridal gown and veil are symbols of virginal purity, which may have prompted the Queen’s surprise at Meghan’s decision. By contrast, Queen Camilla, who had also been divorced prior to her 2005 wedding to King Charles III, chose not to wear a veil, adhering to a more conventional approach.
Despite these traditions, Meghan’s grand veil, which featured intricate embroidery symbolizing the 53 Commonwealth nations, was a prominent feature of her wedding at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Her bold choice is said to have further underscored her modern approach to royal customs.
