Football fans have taken to social media to praise Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, following their exit from the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic. Coached by Bankole Olowookere, the team faced a 2-0 defeat against the United States in their quarter-final match at the CFC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros, which ended their hopes of winning the coveted trophy.
The Americans avenged their quarterfinal loss to Nigeria in 2022, with Katharine Fuller scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute. Kimball Ascanio then secured the victory with a second goal in the 74th minute. Despite the loss, fans celebrated the Flamingos’ journey and potential, expressing hope for the future of women’s football in Nigeria.
The defeat marked the end of Nigeria’s impressive campaign in the tournament, where the Flamingos had previously won all their group matches against New Zealand, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. This perfect group stage record was their third such achievement in history, following similar successes in 2010 and 2014, during which they scored nine goals and conceded only one.
Having secured their best-ever finish of third place in India in 2022, the Flamingos aimed to surpass that record but encountered a determined American side eager to reach their first semi-final since 2008. Despite the loss, fans commended coach Bankole Olowookere and the team for their valiant effort against the Americans, expressing pride in their performance and hopeful for the future of the young squad.
