The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on former Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o, including a four-match suspension and a monetary fine of $20,000 (£14,960), following a finding of misconduct.
According to a statement cited by BBC Sport, CAF determined that Mr. Eto’o—who currently serves as President of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT)—breached established principles of sportsmanship during the quarter-final match of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations between Cameroon and Morocco, which concluded in a 2–0 defeat for Cameroon in Rabat.
CAF’s findings arose from Mr. Eto’o’s conduct during the fixture, during which he was reportedly observed making animated and confrontational gestures in response to several decisions taken by match officials. It is further understood that CAF President Patrice Motsepe was present at the stadium and personally witnessed the conduct forming the basis of the disciplinary action.
CAF had earlier announced the commencement of an investigation into what it described as “violent confrontations and unacceptable behavior” involving certain players and officials during the quarter-final stage of the competition.
In response, FECAFOOT has formally rejected CAF’s decision, asserting that the disciplinary proceedings “raise serious reservations regarding compliance with the fundamental requirements of a fair trial.” The federation has publicly expressed its support for Mr. Eto’o and indicated its intention to pursue an appeal against the sanctions imposed.
Mr. Eto’o, widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished footballers, has held the office of FECAFOOT President since 2021. His tenure, however, has been accompanied by ongoing controversy, including allegations of governance lapses and improper conduct within the federation. While segments of the Cameroonian football community have criticized his leadership, Mr. Eto’o has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that his administration has implemented meaningful reforms and delivered measurable progress.#newsafro_
