Nollywood actress Bimbo Thomas has recounted a harrowing incident in which armed robbers allegedly targeted Funke Akindele during the filming of Omo Ghetto Part Two in Ebute Metta, Lagos. The attack, which Thomas described as nearly fatal, occurred at a hotel where the cast and crew were lodging.
Thomas, who portrayed Nikky in the blockbuster film, explained that the production frequently faced disruptions from local hoodlums, who took issue with the movie’s depiction of thuggery. Despite growing up in the area, Thomas said additional security had to be brought in to ensure the shoot could proceed safely.
The assault took place around midnight, after filming had concluded. Thomas initially stayed at a separate hotel but joined Akindele upon her invitation. When the robbers arrived shouting “Ole! Ole!,” panic ensued. Thomas and others attempted to hide Akindele, first under a bed and then in a bathroom, while all present prayed fervently.
The attackers, reportedly numbering six inside the hotel with about 20 stationed outside, eventually forced entry. According to Thomas, they called specifically for Akindele and dragged her downstairs to her car, demanding that she sing and dance, which she did to comply.
Calls for help were made to influential figures, including Oba Saheed Elegushi, and police from Panti Station later engaged the assailants, resulting in gunfire and their eventual retreat. Thomas noted that one person was shot and a pastor had to be rushed to the hospital. In the aftermath, some of the attackers were arrested, while others were reportedly killed.
Thomas described the ordeal as “wicked and callous” and said it left a lasting emotional impact. She expressed gratitude that no one in the group was fatally harmed and emphasized her loyalty to Akindele, stating, “If they were going to kill you, they would have killed us together. We thank God. Truly, we thank God.”#newsafro_
