Mark Volman, co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist of the renowned musical group The Turtles, has passed away at the age of seventy-eight (78). His death occurred on September 5, in Nashville, Tennessee, following what has been described as a brief and unforeseen illness, as confirmed by his authorized representative in a statement issued to People magazine.
Mr. Volman co-founded The Turtles—originally known as The Crossfires—in 1963 while attending Westchester High School in California, alongside fellow member Howard Kaylan. The group rose to prominence in the 1960s, achieving commercial success with such chart-topping singles as Happy Together (Billboard No. 1, 1967) and Elenore (1968).
In 2020, Mr. Volman received a medical diagnosis of Lewy body dementia (LBD), a progressive neurological disorder impacting cognitive function, memory, and motor abilities. Reflecting on his condition in a 2023 interview with People, Mr. Volman acknowledged the profound personal challenges associated with the diagnosis, yet expressed a resilient and optimistic outlook, emphasizing the importance of connection, support, and gratitude in his later years.
