The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has officially denied detaining Blossom Williams, a social media influencer and mother of three, amid widespread reports claiming she was arrested on the orders of Daniel Eyakenyi, son of the state’s Deputy Governor.
Reports initially alleged that Williams, who is said to be pregnant, was arrested by police operatives while on her way to a medical appointment. Her family members have described the incident as politically motivated, citing her outspoken activism for good governance and the rights of the marginalized Oro Nation as a potential reason for the alleged action.
However, in a statement issued by the police command, authorities firmly denied any involvement in her detention. They emphasized that no such arrest was carried out and cautioned against the circulation of unverified information that could stoke tension or spread misinformation.
The case has drawn significant attention due to Williams’ advocacy work and the political undertones suggested by her supporters. Human rights groups and online communities are now calling for transparency and protection for activists across the state.
The controversy surrounding Blossom Williams has continued to spark public outrage, with increasing demands for her immediate release and a full, transparent investigation into the circumstances of her alleged detention.
Amid the growing uproar, Timfon John, Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom Police Command, addressed the claims in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Uyo on Friday. John stated, “We are not aware of such detention for now,” distancing the command from any knowledge or involvement in the reported arrest.
Despite the police’s denial, a source close to Williams’ family reiterated to journalists that the pregnant influencer was “forcefully taken into custody” while en route to a medical appointment. The family maintains that the incident was politically motivated, linked to her outspoken criticism of government actions and her advocacy for the marginalized Oro Nation.
The conflicting accounts have intensified calls from civil society organizations and the public for clarity, accountability, and protection of citizens’ rights, particularly those using digital platforms for activism.#newsafro_
