Speed Darlington, a Nigerian singer, was recently arrested after Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy filed a defamation and cyberstalking complaint against him. The arrest stemmed from Darlington’s comments alleging dubious connections between Burna Boy’s Grammy win and Sean “Diddy” Combs, linking them to ongoing legal controversies involving Diddy. Darlington was detained for five days before being released on bail. His mother had appealed to Burna Boy for leniency during this time.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju criticized the arrest, advocating for freedom of speech and decrying the use of police action to address such disputes. Burna Boy has not publicly commented on the case, which has sparked debates on celebrity rivalries and the limits of expression in Nigeria’s entertainment scene.
The ongoing conflict between Burna Boy and Speed Darlington has escalated with allegations that Burna Boy is behind Speed Darlington’s latest arrest. Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, representing Speed Darlington, claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that Burna Boy ordered this second arrest. Adeyanju criticized Burna Boy for allegedly contradicting the anti-oppression themes in his music by “oppressing” Speed Darlington, whom he referred to by his moniker, “Akpi.”
Speed Darlington, recently released after his first arrest related to defamation charges, shared a defiant video, claiming his experiences had only made him stronger. He highlighted his resilience, referencing 18 arrests, including 17 in the U.S. Despite the ongoing legal tussles, Speed Darlington has refused to back down publicly, emphasizing his determination to remain vocal.
