Sophie Habboo has opened up about the “sadness” she still feels when looking back at her 2023 wedding to Jamie Laing, revealing how anxiety spiraled out of control amid the grandeur of their 250-guest ceremony in Sotogrande, Spain.
The former Made In Chelsea star, 31, had always dreamed of an intimate beach wedding, but found herself overwhelmed by the expectations of a big white affair. Speaking on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, Sophie admitted that she didn’t feel she could call off the wedding, which only worsened her stress.
“It was really sad for me to look back on our wedding,” she said. “In so many ways, it was the best day of my life and I should have enjoyed it so much. But I was really struggling and I didn’t cope as well as I could have done because I didn’t know what was wrong with me.”
Sophie revealed that therapy after the wedding led her to an ADHD diagnosis, which helped her understand why the big wedding left her feeling so frazzled. “I feel compassion for the younger version of myself,” she said, explaining that the diagnosis has allowed her to process the overwhelm she experienced during the planning and ceremony.
She recalled the pressure from friends, family, and media, which intensified her anxiety. “Everyone was saying it’s what women should want for themselves… but I was incredibly overwhelmed, which caused massive anxiety,” Sophie explained.
Sophie also confessed that she wished she had been diagnosed earlier. “If I’d been diagnosed earlier, I would have been able to understand and have more compassion for myself,” she said.
Looking back, she regrets not speaking up about wanting a smaller, barefoot beach wedding. “I actually don’t want this enormous 250-person wedding, I want to just get married on a beach with bare feet,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Sophie and Jamie have built a family together, welcoming their son Ziggy two years after their wedding. The couple recently released a Disney+ series, Raising Chelsea, documenting their journey into parenthood, including the ups and downs of balancing work, renovating their home, and navigating life as new parents.
Sophie revealed she’d love to renew her vows in the intimate style she’d originally envisioned, saying, “I think about it all the time… and I’m like no! That’s the point!”
It’s clear that while the 2023 wedding brought unexpected struggles, Sophie is now processing the experience with greater understanding and compassion for herself.#newsafro_
