Rumors of tension between California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris have circulated for years, but Newsom is now putting those whispers to rest.
In a recent interview with political correspondent Alex Thompson, Newsom was asked directly why he and Harris supposedly don’t get along. He quickly dismissed the notion as “preposterous,” pointing to their long history together that stretches back well before their high-profile political careers. He even revealed that they’ve vacationed abroad together with mutual friends.
The speculation may have been fueled by a passage in Harris’ book 107 Days, where she wrote that Newsom avoided her call after President Joe Biden exited the 2024 presidential race. Newsom explained that he had already publicly endorsed Harris at the time and felt she didn’t need to hear from him personally, suggesting that the anecdote was more about narrative flair than reality.
While Newsom admitted that Harris has often advanced ahead of him in their political trajectories, he noted that he currently leads her in a recent UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll for the 2028 presidential election. The comments make it clear that, despite political rivalry, their personal relationship remains friendly.#newsafro_
