Khloé Kardashian, a 41-year-old public figure and reality television personality, was subjected to widespread public criticism on Thursday evening after she indicated approval of a social media post commending the late political commentator and right-wing activist, Charlie Kirk, who had been fatally shot one day earlier.
In addition to “liking” the aforementioned post, Ms. Kardashian also appended a comment consisting of praying-hand emojis and further disseminated a separate post reporting on Mr. Kirk’s death. The latter, described as nonpartisan in tone, concerned his killing at the age of 31 after sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck allegedly fired by an unidentified assailant positioned on the roof of a building at Utah Valley University.
At the time of reporting, the perpetrator remained at large. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel had traveled to Utah on Thursday in connection with the incident, amid public scrutiny of the Bureau’s failure to promptly apprehend the suspect and criticism of Director Patel’s earlier removal of a senior special agent previously responsible for high-profile investigations in the jurisdiction.
Public reaction to Ms. Kardashian’s actions has been sharply divided, with many of her followers objecting to any appearance of support for Mr. Kirk, who was a polarizing figure noted for his anti-abortion, anti-immigration, anti-transgender, and pro-Second Amendment positions.
The Daily Mail reported that inquiries were made to Ms. Kardashian’s representative for official comment; however, no response had been received at the time of publication.
Public scrutiny intensified when it was observed that Ms. Kardashian had “liked” a post published by the Instagram account Pray.com. Said post contained a video of the late Mr. Kirk in conversation with an audience member at a speaking engagement, wherein he discussed his Christian faith. The content in question did not address Mr. Kirk’s political or social positions, which are widely regarded as controversial. Multiple social media users preserved screenshots of both Ms. Kardashian’s “like” and her comment beneath the video, consisting of three praying-hand emojis.
Additional screenshots circulated by followers indicated that Ms. Kardashian had also shared to her Instagram Stories a post authored by a South Carolina–based chiropractor, known for disseminating anti-vaccination content. That post adopted a nonpartisan framing, lamenting societal desensitization to violent acts and expressly declaring that such violence was “nothing to do with left or right or red or blue.”
Notwithstanding, several members of the public condemned Ms. Kardashian’s actions. One commenter, writing on Reddit, characterized her engagement as “the worst thing she’s ever done in my eyes,” while another rejected the purportedly nonpolitical framing, asserting: “This has EVERYTHING to do with politics.”
Further commentary suggested skepticism that Ms. Kardashian would publicly address the controversy; one user predicted that, should she issue a statement, it would likely take the form of a conciliatory but “flimsy” justification such as “politics aside, he was a husband and a father.”
Critics also alleged that Ms. Kardashian’s privileged social standing insulated her from the political ramifications of her actions. One particularly forceful remark stated: “I will not waste an ounce of empathy on a man who didn’t bat an eye when innocent children were shot in their classrooms,” apparently referencing a 2023 speech in which Mr. Kirk had opined that certain gun-related fatalities were “worth it” in order to preserve the constitutional right to bear arms under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.#newsafro_
