Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard, 49, and her partner Guillaume Canet, 52, formally announced the dissolution of their relationship on Friday, concluding a partnership that began in 2007.
The former couple issued a brief public statement confirming their separation. At the time of reporting, representatives for both Cotillard and Canet had not responded to DailyMail.com’s request for comment.
Although widely celebrated for her performances in acclaimed French cinema, Marion Cotillard has secured international recognition through prominent roles in high-profile English-language films, notably in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.
She received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of iconic French chanteuse Édith Piaf in the 2007 biographical film La Vie en Rose.
Earlier this year, Cotillard appeared solo on the red carpet at the Berlin International Film Festival, a move that preceded the public confirmation of her separation from Guillaume Canet. Together, the pair had long been regarded as one of France’s premier celebrity couples, with Canet himself being a distinguished actor, screenwriter, and director.
In a statement issued to Agence France-Presse, Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet confirmed the termination of their relationship, citing a desire “to avoid all speculation, rumors, and risky interpretations” as the reason for making their separation public.
While the statement did not disclose the underlying cause of the split, the former couple emphasized that the decision was reached by “common accord” and was characterized by “mutual goodwill.”
Cotillard and Canet had shared a longstanding personal history, having first met and worked together on the 2003 French-language film Love Me If You Dare. Although they reportedly never formalized their union through marriage, the pair were frequently compelled to deny marital status over the years. Contributing to public confusion was Cotillard’s habit of wearing a diamond ring on her left ring finger— a gift from Canet—which led to persistent speculation about an engagement, which they repeatedly clarified was not the case.
The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Marcel, in 2011, followed by the birth of their daughter, Louise, in 2017.
In addition to their romantic relationship, Cotillard and Canet maintained a longstanding professional partnership, collaborating on various creative projects over the years.
Guillaume Canet directed Marion Cotillard in a number of his feature films, including Little White Lies (2010), Blood Ties (2013), its sequel in 2019, Rock’n Roll (2017), and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (2023). In the latter two, the pair also appeared together on screen.
Their professional collaboration dates back to The Last Flight (2009), a romantic drama directed by Karim Dridi, in which both Cotillard and Canet played lead roles.
Most recently, the two worked together on the upcoming feature Karma, directed by Canet and starring Cotillard. Principal photography on the film reportedly concluded in May 2025.
Cotillard made her English-language debut in Tim Burton’s Big Fish (2003), later gaining international prominence with roles in A Good Year (2006), Public Enemies and Nine (both 2009), Inception (2010), Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (2011), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Macbeth (2015), and Allied (2016), in which she starred opposite Brad Pitt.
In 2021, she received critical acclaim for her performance alongside Adam Driver in Annette, an experimental musical directed by French auteur Leos Carax, which earned him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Among Cotillard’s most praised French-language films are A Very Long Engagement (2004), Two Days, One Night (2014), and Ismael’s Ghosts (2017).
While Canet’s directorial work has received varied critical reception, his 2006 thriller Tell No One—adapted from the novel by Harlan Coben—was both a critical and commercial success.
As an actor, Canet appeared in Danny Boyle’s The Beach (2000), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and lent his voice to the character Lightning McQueen in the French-language version of Pixar’s Cars. In 2018, he featured in Non-Fiction, a satirical dramedy by acclaimed filmmaker Olivier Assayas.#newsafro_
