Following three prior marital dissolution, Halle Berry has reaffirmed her belief in enduring partnership and confirmed that she is engaged to her longtime partner, Grammy Award–winning musician Van Hunt.
Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, the 59-year-old Academy Award winner addressed recent speculation regarding her engagement status. Berry clarified that reports suggesting she had declined Hunt’s proposal were inaccurate, stating that while no wedding date has been fixed, she did, in fact, accept the proposal and confirmed that Hunt presented her with an engagement ring.
Berry’s comments followed a recent interview in which she disclosed that Hunt, 55, proposed in June of the previous year. She explained that her initial hesitation related to practical considerations, including legal and health-related matters associated with marriage, rather than a lack of commitment to the relationship.
The couple were introduced through Hunt’s brother in April 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and maintained a long-distance courtship through calls and text messages before meeting in person several months later.
Reflecting on her past relationships, Berry acknowledged public scrutiny following her previous divorces and rejected narratives that framed her marital history as a personal failing. She described her current relationship as the most stable and fulfilling she has experienced, attributing that growth to personal introspection and emotional healing.
Berry has previously been married three times: to former professional baseball player David Justice, singer Eric Benét, and actor Olivier Martinez. She shares a son with Martinez and a daughter from a prior relationship with model Gabriel Aubry.
Hunt has one adult son from a previous relationship.
