Two officers serving with the Enugu State Police Command have been confirmed dead following a violent attack by armed assailants.
Information obtained indicates that the incident occurred on Thursday night when gunmen attacked personnel of the Distress Response Squad stationed at a checkpoint along Agbani Road. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the officers, resulting in the fatal shooting of two policemen and the destruction of a patrol vehicle, which was set ablaze.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed that the attack was allegedly perpetrated by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
According to the statement, the attackers initiated gunfire without provocation, prompting an immediate response from the police operatives. The exchange reportedly forced the assailants to flee, some of them sustaining gunshot injuries. During the incident, the police operational vehicle was razed, while two officers suffered critical gunshot wounds. They were subsequently rushed to a medical facility, where they were later certified dead by attending medical personnel.
Mr. Ndukwe further stated that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Giwa, has ordered an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators, directing all tactical and intelligence units to deploy available resources and actionable intelligence to ensure the suspects are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.#newsafro_
