Afrobeat singer and activist Seun Kuti has issued a sharp rebuke to fans of Nigerian superstar Wizkid, admonishing them to stop invoking the name of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, in online music debates.
In an Instagram video posted Saturday, Seun addressed Wizkid’s fan base, Wizkid FC, telling them to “keep Fela’s name out of your mouths,” and criticized what he described as ignorant attempts to compare contemporary artists to his father.
“You try to steal the man. You try to claim that this your artiste is the new Fela. Then, when you people saw that you couldn’t wear those pants, that the shoes were too big to fill, you now turn around,” Seun stated, adding that such comparisons fail when fans realize they cannot be sustained. He emphasized that disrespect born of ignorance, rather than defiance, is unacceptable.
Seun also called out toxic fan culture for fostering unnecessary rivalry within the music industry, urging fans to focus on appreciating music rather than provoking conflict. He questioned why fans struggle to enjoy an artist’s work without constant comparisons, suggesting that social media drama often stems from unfulfilled expectations rather than genuine passion.
Highlighting his family’s history of supporting the music community, including initiatives such as Felabration, Seun stressed that Fela’s legacy is not open to debate. He reiterated that his father’s name should not be used in fan wars and insisted that the late Afrobeat pioneer deserves respect and peace.#newsafro_
