Independent filmmaker Offie Darlington, also known as Mr. Darlington, has been named Next Rated Filmmaker at the 2025 edition of the African Smartphone International Film Festival (ASIFF).
Darlington earned the accolade for his project I’m Awele’s Daughter, which was supported by ENIFF Nigeria, MYIFF Kenya, and the British Council. Reacting to the award, he described it as a validation of his team’s efforts:
“Winning the ‘Next Rated Filmmaker’ title on a project supported by the British Council and ENIFF was a profound honor. It validates the work we do in telling authentic African stories, and I dedicate this award to the entire Umoja team who made the project possible.”
Following his win, Darlington announced plans to return to independent film-making with a new short film, Ojuju Kids, to be produced under his production outfit, Asabawood. Production is scheduled to commence in late 2026, with Tower FM, Nsukka, listed as a supporting partner.
Darlington emphasized that the project aims to strengthen homegrown creative structures while engaging international platforms. He added:
“Asabawood is not just about making films; it’s about shaping the future of African storytelling by empowering the next generation of filmmakers.”
