At the 77th Emmy Awards, held Sunday evening at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, actress Kathy Bates, 77, presented a noticeably slimmer figure in a walnut-brown ball gown with a regal cowl neckline.
Ms. Bates has, over several years, undergone a weight reduction of approximately 100 pounds, reportedly achieving her final 15–20 pounds of loss with the assistance of the medication Ozempic. Her decision to pursue weight loss was informed in part by a prior diagnosis of diabetes, the condition for which Ozempic was originally developed before its subsequent adoption in weight management.
This year, Ms. Bates has become the oldest-ever nominee in the category of Lead Actress in a Drama, recognized for her starring role in CBS’ gender-reimagined Matlock reboot. Her fellow nominees in the category include Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Britt Lower (Severance), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), and Keri Russell (The Diplomat).
Arriving for her history-making evening, Ms. Bates was joined by her co-star, Skye P. Marshall, who portrays her character’s superior in the series. Bates is also serving as a presenter during the awards ceremony.
The 77th Emmy Awards, broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, honor achievements in television across multiple categories. Hosted by Grammy-nominated comedian Nate Bargatze, the ceremony featured a slate of leading contenders, with Apple TV+’s Severance securing 27 nominations—among them Best Drama Series and acting nods for its principal cast. HBO’s The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell, followed with 24 nominations, including Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Apple’s The Studio and HBO’s The White Lotus (season three) each received 23 Emmy Award nominations, placing them in a tie for recognition across multiple categories. The White Lotus secured numerous supporting and guest acting nominations for its ensemble, while The Studio garnered attention for its satirical portrayal of Hollywood executives endeavoring to revive a declining studio.
The Studio features performances by Seth Rogen, Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, Chase Sui Wonders, and Kathryn Hahn, and includes cameo appearances by several high-profile actors portraying themselves.
In The White Lotus, cast members Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, Sam Rockwell, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, Aimee Lou Wood, and Scott Glenn are all contenders for individual acting awards. Series creator Mike White is additionally nominated in the categories of writing and directing.
Speculation has arisen among fans regarding perceived tension between Mr. Goggins and Ms. Wood, following reports that Mr. Goggins unfollowed his co-star on Instagram. This action came shortly after he had publicly expressed positive remarks about Ms. Wood’s performance. Addressing the matter in a June interview with Variety, Mr. Goggins explained that it is his customary practice to discontinue personal communication with colleagues upon the conclusion of a major production, noting as precedent his two-year lapse in contact with former Justified co-star Timothy Olyphant.#newsafro_
