Sydney Sweeney’s most recent motion picture release has experienced a markedly deficient commercial performance at the box office, an outcome that may arguably be attributable, at least in part, to reputational consequences arising from her prior involvement in an advertising campaign with American Eagle.
Said campaign, which employed the marketing phrase “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans/Genes,” provoked public controversy and allegations from certain critics who contended that the messaging bore connotations of Nazi-related propaganda.
The new motion picture, Americana—in which Ms. Sweeney, age 27, appears alongside Halsey, age 30, and Paul Walter Hauser, age 38—had its initial premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in 2023. The film was released to theaters nationwide only on Friday.
Authored and directed by Tony Tost, the production constitutes a crime drama narrating the intersection of several disparate individuals whose circumstances converge in a violent manner following the appearance of a rare Lakota Ghost Shirt within the black-market economy of a small town situated in South Dakota.
Although Americana received limited favorable attention during its initial festival circuit, subsequent critical reception has been moderate, with the film presently holding an aggregate rating of 68 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Per reporting by The Hollywood Reporter, the film is projected to realize approximately $850,000 in gross receipts across 1,100 theaters during its opening weekend, placing it in the 16th position at the domestic box office.
In advance of the release, Ms. Sweeney utilized her social media platform to promote the motion picture, referencing her character—a prospective country singer known as Penny Jo—by remarking: “a few years ago I filmed this little movie with some friends and now you get to meet penny jo ♥️.”
Subsequent public reaction, however, was polarized. Commentary was not limited to the cinematic work itself but extended into scrutiny of Ms. Sweeney’s political affiliations. Specifically, records indicate that Ms. Sweeney registered as a Republican voter in the State of Florida prior to the 2024 Presidential election. Certain individuals responded critically, with comments suggesting that such political alignment diminished their respect for her and raising references to former President Trump’s alleged association with Jeffrey Epstein, who was indicted on charges relating to sex trafficking of minors before his death while in federal custody.
Conversely, other members of the public expressed support, framing Ms. Sweeney’s political stance and outspokenness as a positive quality. For instance, supportive remarks included: “I love how she pisses so many people off by just existing” and praise describing her as “The woman who made the woke community cry ❤️.”#newsafro_
