Mr. James Argent, aged 37 and formerly of The Only Way is Essex, has issued a public response following the imposition of a suspended custodial sentence relating to an incident involving his former partner, Ms. Nicoline Artursson, aged 32. The court imposed a six-month suspended sentence along with a two-year restraining order, following Mr. Argent’s admission to having physically pushed Ms. Artursson during a domestic altercation in Spain.
Subsequent to the court proceedings, public speculation has emerged regarding Mr. Argent’s sobriety, with particular reference to his well-documented history of substance misuse. Mr. Argent has previously undergone multiple rehabilitation programs to address issues related to drug and alcohol dependency.
In his statement, Mr. Argent addressed these concerns directly, aiming to refute any assertions that the aforementioned incident was precipitated by a relapse into former patterns of addictive behavior.
In an exclusive statement to MailOnline, Mr. James Argent categorically denied speculation that the incident giving rise to the recent legal proceedings was the result of a relapse into substance abuse.
Mr. Argent stated: “I haven’t relapsed. I am still three years and four months clean and sober. I am devastated by what’s happened.”
It was disclosed on Tuesday evening that Mr. Argent had admitted to an offence of domestic violence, specifically involving the act of pushing his then-partner of nine months down a set of steps outside her residence on the Costa del Sol. This admission formed the basis of the suspended custodial sentence and restraining order subsequently imposed by the court.
Mr. James Argent, whose personal history includes long-term struggles with substance dependency and weight-related health issues, has previously endured two near-fatal drug overdoses in connection with his past cocaine addiction. Despite these challenges, Mr. Argent has remained abstinent from both alcohol and illicit substances since 2022. His recovery has been supported by a structured rehabilitation programme, a commitment to sobriety, and significant lifestyle changes, including undergoing gastric band surgery to address his physical health.
Mr. Argent has publicly acknowledged the psychological and emotional toll exacted by early fame, including experiences of isolation, shame stemming from an eating disorder, and the pressures associated with public life following his appearance on the reality television programme The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE).
In a 2020 interview, Mr. Argent elaborated on the genesis of his substance misuse, stating that his exposure to nightlife and club appearances as part of his television career led to increasingly frequent alcohol consumption and drug use. He noted that approximately 18 months after joining TOWIE, his family and close associates began to recognise signs of addiction.
He further acknowledged the impact of his addiction on intimate relationships, citing the breakdown of his relationship with Ms. Lydia Bright, a former partner and fellow TOWIE cast member, as a pivotal moment. He described how the emotional distress following the breakup, coupled with body image insecurities, contributed to a deepening of his substance use as a means of escapism.#newsafro_
