Pursuant to Article 243 of the 1992 Constitution and the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended, Her Excellency Ebi Bright—an accomplished actress, diplomat, and the 2024 parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tema Central—has been nominated by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for appointment as the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Greater Accra Region.
The nomination, which forms part of a nationwide exercise to appoint new MCEs, remains subject to vetting and confirmation by the relevant Metropolitan Assembly in accordance with law. A formal presentation of all such nominees is anticipated in due course.
Notably, in a January 2025 interview with Graphic Showbiz, Ms. Bright disclosed that she faced repeated dismissals from diplomatic roles due to her declared political ambitions, particularly during periods of active campaigning—underscoring the personal and professional sacrifices attendant to her public service.
Ms. Bright further recounted that she had been subjected to ridicule and condescension, with detractors dismissing her political aspirations on the basis of her creative arts background.
“I was told point blank that politics is not for ‘Cantata’ people like me. I remember one man saying, ‘Does this girl think politics is the Cantata she acts?’” she disclosed.
She characterized such remarks as emblematic of the broader marginalisation faced by creatives in public life, adding, “This is how people are marginalised, and I know my win will encourage many creatives.”#newsafro_
