Benson Boone captivated audiences with his flip-filled performance at last Sunday’s Grammy Awards, and now, footage from his teenage years as a competitive diver has gone viral.
Before making waves in the music industry, the 22-year-old pop star was an accomplished diver at Monroe High School in Washington State.
Boone competed in the WIAA Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships 4A for three consecutive years, securing sixth place in the one-meter diving event in 2020 and seventh place in 2019, according to DiveMeets.
TikTok users were quick to react to Benson Boone’s resurfaced diving clips, expressing amazement at his diverse talents.
User @Ashleigh commented, “Oh, he’s one of those multitalented genius kids.”
User @Caren marveled, “So he’s just good at… everything?”
Meanwhile, @thisgirl simply noted, “Well… this explains a lot.”
TikTok users continued to express their admiration for Benson Boone’s athletic background.
User @teshan2 observed, “It had to be either that or a gymnast. He knows what he’s doing. Wow.”
User @JenniferGoodin added, “This makes total sense. I was shocked at his twisting—it didn’t seem new to him, like he had experience. Guess he did.”
Boone also displayed his acrobatic skills while starring as Buddy in Monroe High School’s production of Elf: The Musical. In the playbill, the self-described “hyper” performer wrote that he enjoyed “singing, sports, and backflipping.”
His father, Nate Boone, shared with KING 5 Seattle last Friday, “When he was probably three years old, we just could never stop him from doing backflips off the couch or flips wherever he could.”
At the Grammys last Sunday, Boone—who caught the attention of Jennifer Lopez—lost the Best New Artist award to Chappell Roan but still made a lasting impression with his sparkly blue jumpsuit and an “aggressive” crotch grab during his performance.
The Mormon musician, who boasts 40.8 million monthly Spotify listeners, has seen several of his songs chart, including Beautiful Things, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year. His debut studio album, Fireworks & Rollerblades, secured the No. 6 spot on the Billboard 200 chart.
Boone is next up for two nominations—International Artist of the Year and Best International Song—at the 2025 BRIT Awards, airing March 1 on ITV.
The American Idol season 19 alum will then embark on his 21-date Fireworks & Rollerblades World Tour, kicking off March 8 at the Sips & Sounds Music Festival in Austin, Texas.
Meanwhile, next month, Boone and fellow TikTok sensation Maggie Thurmon will mark their first anniversary as a couple.#newsafro_
