Over 55 people have reportedly been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza, according to rescue teams in the area. The airstrike is part of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, with escalating violence resulting in substantial casualties on both sides. Gaza’s health authorities have described the impact on civilians as devastating, as emergency responders work to rescue those trapped under the rubble. This development marks another grim chapter in the conflict, as the international community continues to call for a ceasefire to protect civilians and prevent further loss of life.
Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that over 55 people were killed in an overnight Israeli airstrike targeting a residential building in Beit Lahia, a northern district of Gaza. The five-story building, belonging to the Abu Nasr family, was struck, with numerous casualties and many people still trapped under the rubble. Civil defense spokesperson Mahmud Bassal confirmed to AFP that “dozens more” were injured.
Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, reported that 15 of the deceased were brought to the hospital. In response, the Israeli military stated it is “looking into the reports.” This incident adds to the mounting civilian toll in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict, as international pressure grows for measures to protect civilian lives and mitigate further tragedy.
Dr. Hussam Abu Safia of Kamal Adwan Hospital reported that 35 wounded individuals, most of them children, are currently receiving treatment at the facility. He described the hospital’s critical shortage of staff and medical supplies, noting that only basic first aid materials are available. Safia stated that the hospital’s medical team was detained by Israeli forces last week during their operations in Jabalia, further complicating the hospital’s ability to treat patients effectively.
Since October 6, the Israeli military has launched extensive air and ground operations in northern Gaza, targeting areas such as Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun in an effort to counter Hamas forces. A recent statement from the military reported that ground and air strikes in Jabalia had resulted in the deaths of around 40 militants. Amidst the ongoing conflict, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced from northern Gaza, and the civil defense agency has recorded a high civilian death toll.
