Amanda Zurawski, the lead plaintiff in the Zurawski v Texas case, experienced a complicated pregnancy in 2022 and became a central figure in the lawsuit. The case sought clarification of the “medical emergency” exceptions under Texas’s stringent abortion bans, which took effect following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022.
Despite the plaintiffs’ efforts to address the ambiguity in the law, the Texas Supreme Court ruled in May 2024 that the language used in the abortion bans was sufficient. They declined to clarify the exceptions, leaving the strict bans and their vague medical provisions in place.
