Lucy Beaumont humorously addressed her ex-husband Jon Richardson’s absence during her latest stand-up performance, joking about his tendency to “disappear.” Additionally, she revealed that her parents are currently in the process of separating, adding a personal touch to her routine as she navigates both her comedic and family challenges.
The 41-year-old comedian launched the autumn segment of her live stand-up tour at the London Palladium on Friday night, where she made a reference to her ex-husband and fellow comedian, Jon Richardson. This came despite her recent admission that legal restrictions prevented her from discussing their split.
Lucy and Jon, who have an eight-year-old daughter named Elsie, surprised fans by announcing their separation in April after nine years of marriage. However, Lucy, hailing from Hull, indicated that they remain on amicable terms. During her performance on Friday night, Jon, 42, was included in one of her jokes, which Lucy acknowledged she should have “taken out” in light of their recent split.
Regarding their daughter’s upbringing, Lucy commented, “I tried to bring her up quite spiritual, as that’s how I was raised. I was even showing her how to burn sage in the living room to clear out negative energy.”
Lucy continued, recounting a conversation with her daughter: “She said, ‘Don’t, Mummy, Daddy will disappear.’” This elicited laughter from the audience, to which Lucy responded, “When I wrote that, it was a joke, but now it sounds like I actually did.” She added, “I keep meaning to take it out, but we’re still friends—there’s nothing to worry about.”
Later in her performance, Lucy revealed that her parents’ marriage is also ending, stating, “My daughter’s had this amazing effect on my mum and dad. They don’t spend much time together—they’re separating—but now they have weekends together.”
Lucy and Jon, a team captain on Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, began dating in 2013 after meeting through mutual friend Roisin Conaty. They collaborated on various projects, including Meet The Richardsons on Dave.
Neither Lucy nor Jon have publicly addressed their separation since its announcement. The split reportedly involved Jon transferring £1.625 million to Lucy as compensation for her shares in a company where they both served as directors.
The couple, who have accumulated a joint fortune of £6 million, issued a joint statement stating: “After nine years of marriage, we would like to announce that we have separated.”
The statement continued: “We have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go our separate ways.”
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Lucy discussed the constraints placed on her by legal counsel regarding the divorce, reflecting on the public nature of their marriage. She stated, “I don’t regret anything. However, moving forward, I am committed to maintaining my personal life as private.”
Lucy expressed some guilt about previously discussing her daughter, marriage, and family dynamics, noting, “I think partly I was feeling grateful—grateful for the opportunities and interviews, which made me feel I had to sacrifice and share everything.”
In her conversation with OK! Magazine, Lucy reiterated her reluctance to discuss the separation in detail.
She stated, “Individuals may believe I should address the situation due to our public profile as a couple, but I will not do so, and this is not due to any animosity.”
Lucy added, “We have mutually agreed that, although it may seem unusual for others to not receive any updates, we will refrain from discussing any aspects related to our marriage or each other.”
Following their separation, fans have discovered previous video clips that indicate potential issues in the marriage, including one where Lucy expressed her concerns about possibly having “made a mistake” in marrying Jon, while also criticizing his stubbornness.
When asked if she harbored any concerns regarding her ex-husband during his appearance on Ultimate Worrier, Lucy responded, “I have many. At times, I question whether I made a mistake.”
She elaborated on Jon’s inability to acknowledge when he is incorrect or has erred, stating, “One of the significant challenges in a marriage is when the other party cannot admit to being wrong. They are unable to say, ‘I apologize, I made a mistake.'”
In a recently resurfaced clip, Lucy humorously expressed her skepticism about the longevity of her marriage to Jon, making the remark two years prior to their separation announcement. During an episode of 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown in 2022, Lucy candidly shared her thoughts on their union, which led Jon to inquire, “Are you breaking up?”
In the footage, host Jimmy Carr asked Lucy about her decision to settle down, to which she replied, “I don’t see this as a lifelong commitment. Isn’t there a song titled ‘Just Passing Through’? It suggests a season, a reason, or a lifetime. Throughout life, you encounter old souls, new souls, and individuals who may not be the best.”
She reflected on their time together, stating, “Before Jon, I had never even tried an avocado. We’ve had a wonderful life together, and we share a daughter. Who knows what the future holds?”
A visibly taken aback Jon responded, “Are you breaking up now?” as he buried his face in his hands. Lucy reassured him, saying, “We have a lovely daughter, so it has been worth it.”
