Gayle King’s ex-husband, William Bumpus, has issued a public apology for cheating on the broadcaster nearly four decades ago — an affair that involved one of King’s close friends — following renewed attention to the painful chapter.
Bumpus, who was married to King for 11 years before their 1993 divorce, told TMZ he takes full responsibility for the infidelity and expressed regret for the impact it had on King, their children, and their family. His comments come after King recently revisited the incident on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, where she recounted discovering the betrayal firsthand.
In his statement, Bumpus apologized to King, their daughter Kirby, their son William Jr., their grandchildren, and extended family, acknowledging the lasting damage caused by his actions. He also noted that he previously addressed the issue publicly in 2016 and said his position has not changed.
Despite the painful past, Bumpus emphasized that he and King have maintained a respectful relationship over the years, particularly in co-parenting their children and staying connected through family milestones. He also expressed gratitude toward King for her support during their marriage, including encouraging him through law school and helping build a strong foundation for their children.
King, meanwhile, previously shared her side of the story during her podcast appearance, describing how she unexpectedly discovered the affair and later confided in close friend Oprah Winfrey, who supported her through the ordeal.
Bumpus concluded his statement by saying he remains focused on his family and personal growth, adding that he continues to work on becoming a better person while appreciating the life he has built since.
King and Bumpus finalized their divorce in 1993 after more than a decade of marriage.#newsafro_
