The family and supporters of George Floyd are speaking out after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made another controversial joke about Floyd during a recent Netflix roast honoring Kevin Hart.
According to TMZ, members of Floyd’s inner circle were deeply offended by the remark and are now criticizing Hart for allegedly allowing the joke to be part of the show. Travis Cains, a spokesperson for The Gianna and George Floyd Foundation, reportedly described Kevin’s approval of the joke as “sad for the culture.”
During his set at the roast, Tony joked to the audience that the Black community was proud of Kevin Hart before adding a controversial punchline referencing Floyd’s death. The comment quickly sparked backlash online and among Floyd’s loved ones, who said they found the joke disturbing rather than humorous.
Sources close to the foundation say George Floyd’s family believes Kevin Hart should have stepped in and made it clear that Floyd should not be used as material for the roast. They also expressed frustration over what they described as Tony Hinchcliffe’s repeated use of George Floyd jokes in public performances.
This is not the first time Hinchcliffe has faced criticism over such remarks. During Netflix’s roast of former NFL star Tom Brady, Tony previously made another joke involving Floyd that also triggered outrage on social media.
The situation has become even more emotional for Floyd’s family because his daughter, Gianna, is now 12 years old and reportedly dealing with bullying at school. Representatives for the foundation say comments and jokes circulating online only make matters worse for the family as they continue trying to heal years after Floyd’s death.
The foundation also accused Hinchcliffe of using racially insensitive humor and questioned how others in the entertainment industry would react if similar jokes were made about someone close to them.
