A viral stand-up clip from comedian Akilah Hughes has stirred controversy online after she took aim at Keegan-Michael Key’s wife, Elle Key — but insiders say her claims don’t hold water.
In the widely circulated video, which has been making the rounds on Reddit, Hughes accuses Elle of being a controlling influence in Key’s life and career. During her set, she uses the coded phrase “Lock and Banana” while referencing comedy duo Jordan Peele and Key, alleging that a show she worked on with Key around the pandemic fell apart at the last minute due to Elle’s involvement as an executive producer.
Hughes goes even further, claiming she was warned about Elle by Peele’s wife, and drawing a shocking comparison to the late Phil Hartman’s wife, Brynn — a remark that has raised eyebrows given its severity.
However, multiple sources close to Key and Elle have pushed back strongly, telling TMZ that Hughes’ narrative is “outlandish and fabricated,” dismissing the stand-up bit as baseless.
Hughes also suggested that Elle created a divide between Key and Peele, but both stars have previously stated they remain on good terms, even if they no longer collaborate as frequently as they did during their Key & Peele days.
The criticism also clashes with Key’s recent career moves, as he continues to land major roles — including his return in the upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a project Hughes reportedly mocked during her set.
For now, it seems Hughes’ “Lock and Banana” routine is generating more backlash than backing — and certainly isn’t winning approval from the Keys.#newsafro_
