Hilary Duff has disclosed that she was still legally married to her first husband, Mike Comrie, at the time she began recording her fifth studio album, Breathe In. Breathe Out., in 2013 with future spouse Matthew Koma.
Duff and Comrie, who married in 2010, separated in 2014 after fewer than four years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in 2016. In a recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Duff explained that the decision to end the marriage was mutual and evolved to a point where continuation was no longer viable. She emphasized that the separation was collaborative rather than abrupt, noting that both parties recognized the relationship was no longer functioning.
Referencing her own parents’ contentious divorce, Duff acknowledged that formally ending her marriage was emotionally difficult. However, she stated that despite sharing a young child—Luca Cruz Comrie, who will turn 14 on March 20—the couple prioritized maintaining a peaceful co-parenting dynamic. She described making deliberate efforts to ensure transitions were not merely custodial exchanges, but included shared activities to provide stability and comfort for their son.
Duff characterized the period as particularly challenging given Luca’s young age at the time of separation, recalling concerns about the potential emotional impact on him. She indicated that she deferred processing certain personal emotions in order to focus on safeguarding her child’s well-being.
Following the separation, Duff pursued therapy while navigating subsequent relationships before ultimately marrying Koma in 2019. The couple share three daughters and reside in Beverly Hills.
Professionally, Duff is preparing to embark on her first global tour in nearly two decades, titled The Lucky Me Tour, commencing in June. She is also concluding a sold-out Las Vegas residency at Voltaire inside The Venetian Resort. Duff initially rose to prominence portraying the lead role in the Lizzie McGuire television series and its 2003 feature film adaptation.#newsafro_
