A Nigerian footballer who was pronounced dead after collapsing during a pre-season match has reportedly shown signs of life while at a mortuary in Katsina.
Chinedu Ozor, a 30-year-old defender for Katsina United, collapsed about 10–13 minutes into a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Tuesday.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where a doctor reportedly pronounced him dead. The club subsequently announced his death, prompting an outpouring of condolences from football clubs and fans, including his former teams, Kano Pillars and Heartland.
However, the situation reportedly took an unexpected turn after his body was taken to Katsina General Hospital. According to grassroots sports journalist Prince CJ, medical personnel noticed movement from Ozor while he was in the mortuary.
His hand was reportedly seen moving, prompting those present to raise the alarm. He was immediately taken back for medical treatment and placed in intensive care.
Katsina United media officer Nasir Gide confirmed that the club had followed the procedures available to them after Ozor was initially pronounced dead.
Ozor is currently receiving treatment and remains on oxygen as medical personnel work to stabilize his condition. The circumstances surrounding the initial declaration of death have not yet been fully explained.
The right-back joined Katsina United this season after spells with Abia Warriors, Lobi Stars, Sunshine Stars, Heartland and Kano Pillars.
