Trump Administration Cancels 175,000+ US Visas Over Criminal Offences, Fraud

Thousands of foreign nationals holding U.S. visas are facing increased scrutiny as the Trump administration ramps up its immigration enforcement efforts.

The U.S. Department of State says it has revoked more than 175,000 visas since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025.

The latest figure, announced on August 10, 2026, represents a major jump from the more than 100,000 visa cancellations previously disclosed by the department.

U.S. officials say the cancellations are part of an expanded continuous-vetting process designed to identify visa holders who may have broken American laws or pose public-safety, national-security or foreign-policy concerns.

So, why are visas being revoked?

According to the State Department, many of the visa cancellations followed encounters with law enforcement.

Some of the offences cited include assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related crimes.

Other cases reportedly involved reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud and embezzlement.

Officials also mentioned cases involving more serious allegations, including kidnapping, human trafficking, sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material.

Birth tourism is also on the radar

Birth tourism has also become a focus of the administration.

The State Department said more than 100 visas were revoked by a U.S. embassy in North Africa after authorities accused the affected parents of traveling to America primarily to give birth and secure U.S. citizenship for their children.

The administration has been taking a tougher position on birth tourism as part of its broader immigration crackdown.

Financial fraud is another major concern. Officials cited visa cancellations connected to alleged multimillion-dollar Medicaid fraud schemes and cases involving falsified business documents.

Social media posts could also attract attention

Perhaps one of the more controversial aspects of the latest visa crackdown is the role of online activity.

The State Department said it revoked visas belonging to some foreign nationals who allegedly celebrated the September 2025 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Some of the comments reportedly praised the killing or expressed hostility toward the victim.

The use of political speech and social media activity in visa decisions has drawn criticism from immigration and civil-rights advocates, who argue that such measures could raise free-speech concerns.

Foreign policy can also play a role

Not every visa cancellation is connected to a criminal conviction.

The State Department said it has also taken action against foreign nationals allegedly connected to Cuban and Iranian government influence operations.

Officials also cited a Kuwaiti national accused of expressing support for violence against President Donald Trump and describing Americans as enemies.

Another case highlighted by the department involved Tou Lue Vang, a Laotian national and convicted sex offender whose case had previously gained attention after he received a pardon from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

What does this mean for travelers?

For anyone holding a U.S. visa, the latest numbers serve as an important reminder: a visa is not a permanent guarantee of entry into the United States.

The State Department says it is continuing to monitor visa holders and has expanded its vetting processes, including scrutiny of online activity in certain cases.

For Nigerians and other foreign nationals with U.S. visas, staying within the conditions of the visa and avoiding activities that could raise legal or security concerns is increasingly important.

The department says it will continue reviewing visa holders and may revoke visas when individuals no longer meet eligibility requirements or are considered a threat to public safety, national security or U.S. foreign-policy interests.#newsafro_
