Kyrsten Sinema’s boyfriend, Matthew Ammel, is at the center of a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife, who is leveling serious allegations against him. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, Heather Ammel is seeking primary custody of their three children—Clara, Isla, and James—and claims Matthew has a history of substance abuse, including marijuana, narcotics, alcohol, and psychedelics.
Heather alleges that Matthew has exhibited “uncontrolled bouts of anger,” often punching walls, breaking furniture, and screaming at her in fits of rage. She also claims he travels internationally to obtain and use illegal substances, sometimes leaving them where the children could access them, and that she fears he might attempt to flee the country with the kids.
The couple married on October 23, 2010, and separated on November 1, 2024. Heather additionally alleges that Matthew demeaned her in front of their children, using vulgar insults such as “nasty cut” and “a f**ing dumb bitch.” She says that even after he moved out in November 2024, he continues to show up uninvited.
Matthew denies all allegations of drug abuse and of degrading his wife.
The case has drawn Sinema into the spotlight as well. TMZ reports that the former Arizona senator recently filed court documents responding to a separate lawsuit filed by Heather, which accuses Sinema of contributing to the breakdown of her marriage. Sinema has admitted to the affair but denies any conduct in North Carolina—the state where the lawsuit was filed—and argues that the case should be dismissed due to jurisdictional issues.
