Actress Vanessa Hudgens publicly announced on Tuesday the passing of her cherished dog, Darla, expressing profound grief over the loss.
In a statement shared via Instagram, the 37-year-old actress accompanied a montage of photographs of her late pet with the declaration, “I am beyond heartbroken today.” Hudgens, a native of Salinas, California, and widely recognized for her role as Gabriella Montez in High School Musical, stated that Darla was a constant presence in her life, traveling extensively with her and remaining by her side throughout significant personal and professional milestones.
“Anyone that knows me knew Darla,” Hudgens wrote, emphasizing that the dog “went everywhere” with her and “traveled the world,” serving as a steadfast companion. She further described Darla as “the smartest little lady I’ve ever known,” adding that she “couldn’t have asked for a better dog.”
Hudgens, who shares two children with her spouse, professional baseball player Cole Tucker, disclosed that the decision to humanely euthanize Darla was necessitated by the animal’s deteriorating health. She characterized the decision as “one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do,” explaining that the dog’s “little body was failing her and it was her time.” She concluded by expressing that she already missed “the pitter patter of her little paws in the house,” and encouraged followers to cherish their own pets.
The photographic tribute included images of Darla seated at a table with Hudgens, wearing sunglasses, and wrapped in a blanket.
Tucker also issued a public tribute via his Instagram Stories, posting a photograph of Darla and stating, “We lost one of the all time greats today.”
Numerous members of Hudgens’ professional and personal circle extended condolences. Julianne Hough conveyed sympathy and referenced hopes of reunion in a “spiritual rainbow garden.” Actor Max Clayton expressed sorrow and remarked upon the close bond between Hudgens and the dog. Additional tributes were shared by photographer Emilynn Rose and podcaster Adam Cobb, each acknowledging Darla’s affectionate nature and the depth of her connection with Hudgens.
Darla was originally adopted as a rescue dog by Lori Butler, the late mother of Hudgens’ former partner, Austin Butler. Hudgens previously discussed the circumstances surrounding the adoption in a 2018 interview with Collider.#newsafro_
