Nicki Minaj has discussed the reasons behind her growing interest in politics, describing it as a sense of purpose that predates her music career and has become more pronounced in recent years.
The Grammy-winning rapper and global star, born Onika Maraj-Petty in Queens, shared her thoughts during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, a clip of which was posted on Instagram by XXL. Minaj explained that she has long felt she was destined for more than one calling, a conviction that existed even before her rise to fame in music.
She said her political engagement intensified during the most recent U.S. presidential election, when she found herself reacting strongly to political decisions and accurately predicting their outcomes. “I was saying, ‘This is a bad idea’ or ‘This is a good idea,’ and the things I was saying were coming to fruition. It made me think, if it’s this easy, then maybe I should do it,” she said.
Minaj added that a more recent, undisclosed experience reinforced her resolve, noting that opposition and criticism can sometimes propel a person toward their next purpose. “Sometimes people can push you so much that they push you all the way into your next calling, your next blessing,” she reflected.#newsafro_
