Actor Isiah Whitlock Jr., widely recognized for his role as Senator R. Clayton “Clay” Davis on the HBO series The Wire, has passed away at the age of 71. Whitlock died on Tuesday in New York following a brief illness, according to statements from his manager, Brian Liebman.
In addition to his work on The Wire, Whitlock had a distinguished career in both television and film. His television credits include appearances on Veep, Atlanta, The Good Wife, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Louie, and most recently, Netflix’s The Residence, in which he played Chief of Police Larry Dokes.
Whitlock’s film career encompassed multiple collaborations with acclaimed director Spike Lee, including 25th Hour (2002), She Hate Me (2004), Red Hook Summer (2012), Chi-Raq (2015), BlacKkKlansman (2018), and Da 5 Bloods (2020). He also appeared in films such as Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990), Goodfellas (1990), Everyone Says I Love You (1996), Eddie (1996), Enchanted (2007), Cadillac Records (2008), Brooklyn’s Finest (2009), CHiPs (2017), Lightyear (2022), and Cocaine Bear (2023). His final film role will be in The Body Is Water, directed by Vicky Wight, with no release date currently set. Additionally, he recently completed voice work for Disney’s upcoming animated feature Hoppers, scheduled for release in 2026.
Born and raised in Indiana, Whitlock studied theater arts at Southwest Minnesota State University and later trained at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. His early career included guest roles on series such as Cagney & Lacey (1987), Law & Order, New York Undercover, and NYPD Blue.
Whitlock’s work with Spike Lee brought him widespread cultural recognition, particularly for the catchphrase “Sheeeeeit,” first featured in 25th Hour and subsequently integrated into his performances on The Wire and other projects. He spoke publicly about the phrase’s enduring popularity and its reception among fans.
