North West, the eldest daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, on Friday established an Instagram account in her own name, marking her debut on the platform at the age of 12. The initial post consisted of a deliberately blurred photograph of the minor, accompanied by the caption “first post.”
The account’s biography states that it is “managed by parents.” However, the launch occurs against the backdrop of prior and well-documented objections raised by Ms West’s father, Mr Kanye West, regarding his children’s participation on social media platforms under the supervision of their mother, Ms Kardashian.
Mr West has previously voiced his opposition publicly, including in a video recorded in March 2022 that resurfaced online in October, in which he asserted that he had expressly instructed Ms Kardashian that their children should not be active on social media. In that recording, Mr West stated that he was “not allowing [his] daughter to be used by TikTok,” emphasizing his parental authority.
In the debut Instagram image, North West appeared wearing a black Balenciaga short-sleeve jersey, a black ribbed miniskirt, layered jewelry, and knee-high black boots adorned with silver chains. The photograph featured a motion-blur effect, with the subject flashing peace signs and gazing away from the camera.
Notwithstanding the account’s claim of parental supervision, the extent of Mr West’s involvement or approval remains unclear, given his historically stronger opposition to his children’s online presence when compared with Ms Kardashian’s position.
The disagreement between the former spouses resurfaced in October following North West’s appearance in videos posted to the joint TikTok account she shares with her mother, in which she was styled with faux facial tattoos, a simulated nose piercing, grillz, blue braids, and colored contact lenses. Public reaction to the content was divided, with some viewers characterizing the appearance as a Halloween costume, while others deemed it inappropriate for a minor.
Around the same period, footage of Mr West reiterating his objections to his children’s social media use circulated again online. In the clip, he criticized Ms Kardashian’s actions and reaffirmed his position that he would not permit his daughter’s involvement on TikTok.
In response to Mr West’s statements, Ms Kardashian issued a public rebuttal on Instagram, condemning what she described as his “constant attacks” and asserting that they caused harm to their family. She identified herself as the primary caregiver and provider for their children, stating that her objective was to protect her daughter while allowing her supervised creative expression, which she said contributed to the child’s happiness.#newsafro_
