Lizzo has articulated the frustration she experienced as public discourse about her appearance often eclipsed recognition of her artistic work, as reflected in a recent post discussing her weight-loss journey.
The 37-year-old performer, known for Good As Hell, has undergone a significant physical transformation in recent years and recently disclosed that she has reached her target weight. Despite previously being embraced as a leading voice in the body-positivity movement, she stated that she found it increasingly difficult to be perceived as more than her body size.
In her inaugural Substack essay, titled “Why is everybody losing weight and what do we do? Sincerely, a person who’s lost weight,” Lizzo explained that she grew frustrated with being publicly defined by her weight rather than her professional achievements. She noted that critics frequently accused her of making her body “her entire personality,” overshadowing her musical abilities.
She further reflected on her longstanding role as a public figure associated with confidence and body positivity, noting that the treatment she received online at times amounted to emotional mistreatment based solely on her size. Lizzo added that although she had often responded to negative commentary with humour and self-awareness, public perception continued to question her authenticity.
Lizzo stated that weight loss had not originally been her intention. During this period, she faced legal claims brought by former team members alleging workplace misconduct, which she has formally denied. She explained that the cumulative effect of the public scrutiny and litigation caused a significant decline in her mental well-being.
She described reaching a point of severe emotional distress and withdrawing from those close to her. Recognizing this deterioration, she said she made a deliberate decision to redirect her energy toward personal care and recovery.
Lizzo’s renewed health regimen began with Pilates, which she described as a means of addressing her emotional state through physical activity.#newsafro_
