Eddie Murphy has disclosed details concerning an unexpected interaction that occurred early in his career. In his newly released Netflix documentary, Being Eddie, Murphy asserts that the late Academy Award–winning actor Yul Brynner allegedly made a proposition to him on the evening of his 21st birthday.
Murphy, now 64, recounted that the purported incident took place at Studio 54, where he was celebrating the milestone occasion. According to Murphy, Brynner—accompanied by a woman Murphy believed to be his spouse—approached him with an invitation to join them at Brynner’s residence for further “partying.” Murphy stated that he declined the offer and later reflected, humorously, on the implications of the woman’s demeanor during the exchange.
Murphy further remarked, in a joking manner, that the encounter could have become a sensational story had he accepted the invitation. Brynner passed away in 1985 from lung cancer. Although Brynner was married multiple times during his lifetime, records indicate he was not married in 1982, the year Murphy turned 21, leaving the exact identity of the woman Murphy referenced uncertain.
The documentary also features Murphy discussing his family life and the impact of parenthood on his personal development. He explained that raising his ten children shifted his priorities and instilled greater discipline and balance in his daily routine. Murphy shares children with several former partners and with his current wife, Paige Butcher.
Murphy’s personal history has long been the subject of public attention, including his formerly contentious relationship with Melanie Brown (“Mel B”) of the Spice Girls. The former couple shares a child, Angel, now 18, who identifies as a trans man. Murphy and Brown were previously involved in a paternity dispute that created prolonged distance between them; however, their co-parenting relationship has significantly improved in recent years.
Brown, who has since remarried, has stated that her own prior marital difficulties contributed to earlier instability but noted that her and Murphy’s relationship as co-parents has strengthened over time. She also spoke positively of Angel’s interests, including his enthusiasm for Japanese culture and language.#newsafro_
